Kids Life is Neighborhood Ministries’ long-standing after-school program for K-7th grade students.
Every Monday evening during the academic year, an average of 160 youth gather for dinner, worship time, Bible lessons, and age-appropriate classes such as mindfulness, expressive arts, literacy, woodworking, and sports.
Each year, the program reaches about 400 primarily Latinx, inner-city Phoenix youth from low-income households who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in safe, structured extracurricular activities. It offers mentoring, social-emotional learning, relationship-building and builds protective factors in youth who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences. Additionally, this longstanding youth program connects diverse, historically underserved youth and their families to Neighborhood Ministries' holistic services, such as our food bank, bilingual church, Bible Study, workforce development program, and academic support services.
Each July, 60 youths in 5th-7th grade attend our one-week sleepover camp in the mountains near Payson. For many participating youth, this getaway is a rare opportunity to get outside the confines of Phoenix's bustling inner city and experience the quiet and tranquility of nature. This creates time for spiritual development and deep relationship-building. Fun activities include fishing, archery, arts and crafts, and more.
In June each year, about 350 K-7th grade students attend Kids Club, the program's full-day, two-week day camp on Neighborhood Ministries' eight-acre downtown Phoenix campus.
At nearly 40 years strong, this summer camp represents a unique opportunity for impoverished youth to continue learning and growing during the summer and to build relationships with peers and positive role models. It offers many of the same classes and activities as the program's Monday night component, as well as breakfast, lunch, snacks, and exciting field trips that provide youth with opportunities to visit places most have never been. This includes tours of college and university campuses, the children's museum, science center, public pools, and much more. For many youth and their families, this fun camp serves as an introduction to Kids Life's year-round programming and the myriad of other services and programs Neighborhood Ministries offers.
